The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) and the local government associations in England (LGA), Wales (WLGA) and Northern Ireland (NILGA) and our European and international membership organisations CEMR and UCLG, together with ICLEI, are holding this policy dialogue on the Cities and Regions Day of COP26 to advance for the recognition of subnational governments  to net zero climate action.

Local and Regional Governments have a key role in the design and delivery of national net zero plans. A selection of senior local elected members from all over the world will discuss their plans and aspirations for the outcome of the COP26 summit.

Local governments around the world are politically committed to net zero by 2050, many committing to earlier than that.

A key outcome for Local and Regional Governments at COP26 is to strengthen the recognition of subnational actors in international climate agreements such as the COP26 final communiqué and in the delivery of Nationally Determined Contributions.

This event aims to support policy dialogue on the international framework for climate change, allowing members of the global subnational community to call COP26 delegates to go beyond the  UN Paris Agreement initial recognition of the contribution of subnational governments to climate action.

This event will also be live streamed from Blue Zone.

We are therefore pleased that the green grown accelerator pilot projects announced today demonstrate the range of work being undertaken by Councils to reduce emissions."
