We know that effectively protected, restored, and managed land and sea benefits nature, climate, people.

Large partnership initiatives can transform landscapes by restoring habitats and biodiversity. Healthy ecosystems can turn carbon emissions into carbon stores; restored wild places can become places of adventure, exploration and comfort to people. Landscape scale partnerships tackle both the nature and the climate crisis, but they require the ability to look not just one year, but many, into the future. They are a shared vision for a better world. No area illustrates the need for these kinds of partnerships better than the Flow Country, the area of Scottish peatlands that, as part of a 40 year effort, is being restored through partnership work between government, NGOs, research institutions and the community.

This session will outline the history of the Flow Country and discuss the Flow Country partnership, including the efforts of different stakeholders to restore the Flows and pursue a UNESCO bid. You’ll hear from stakeholders at NGOs, the Scottish Government, the local council and the residential youth volunteers- all of whom represent the people and the work needed to protect and restore this vital carbon store and area rich in biodiversity.
